Move your Settings to a New Computer
This document will tell you how to move your ISP-related settings to a new computer.
In order to set up your new computer, you'll need a few things. First, you need to know what kind of computer you have (PC or Macintosh), and you have to know what version of Windows or Mac OS your computer is running.
You'll also need the settings you got from Earthnet when you set up your first computer.
Your information may include:
- dialup access number,
- username(s),
- password(s),
- email address(es),
- incoming and outgoing mail servers...
If you need any of this information, please click here to contact Earthnet Support. Please keep this information in a safe place, you may need it again in the future! You will also need to know what type of connection you have, such as Dialup, DSL, or email-only.
Additionally, if you are using a wireless adapter to connect to your DSL modem, do not forget to write down your WEP key or WPA passphrase (this is not something we can provide to you, since we do not know what your WEP key or your WPA pass phrase is).
Note:
If you are using DSL with an Actiontec or a Cisco modem, and you want to move your settings to a brand new computer, you do not need to reconfigure anything on the modem. Your modem will retain its settings, no matter which computer it is plugged into (the configuration settings are stored on the modem itself, not on the computer). Simply plug the Ethernet cable into your new computer, and it should work right away!
However, if you are using a dialup connection, you will need to reconfigure your connection on the new computer. The same goes for email: you will need to reconfigure your email account on the new computer.
After you have all of your information, you can begin setting up your new computer.

One last note: this document only deals with your ISP settings. Moving to a new computer involves much more than merely reconfiguring your Internet connection and your email account. We urge you to thoroughly backup ALL your personal documents before you make the switch, including but not limited to:
- email contacts or address books,
- email mailboxes and folders,
- favorites websites shortcuts or bookmarks,
- image, music, video, presentations files,
- text documents,
- applications passwords and configuration settings,
- financial and administrative documents, etc.
- licences or serial numbers for your different programs (you might need to call software companies to find out how to transfer the program to your new computer)
- your VPN settings if you connect remotely to your office network,
- etc. etc. etc.
You should also make a check list of all your programs, all your peripherals, all your logins and all your passwords before you get started.
Good luck with your new computer, and don't hesitate to call us if you have trouble connecting your new computer to the Internet or cannot send or receive your email, at 303.546.6362.
